Turner Lake Chain
Canoeing is as Canadian as things come and a really great way to experience the great Canadian outdoors. Here we offer a combined trip with a small amount of hiking and more time canoeing. The Turner Lake Chain is one of the most scenic and best canoe trips to be had in BC. In addition to the canoeing we shall make some day hikes from our bases at the lakes.
Our August trip includes one extra night so that we can visit Bella Coola and take a grizzly bear viewing trip on the Atnarko River. Beginning in late August the bears come down from the mountains to feed on the spawning salmon in the river.
Please bear in mind that this is a wilderness trip and the itinerary is only a suggestion and not set in stone.
DAY ONE - We depart from Whistler at 8am to drive to Nimpo Lake where we will overnight in log cabins at Stewart's Lodge (dinner included).
DAY TWO - After breakfast we will fly in to Ptarmigan Lake to begin our adventure. Before landing though we will circle in the floatplane around Hunlen Falls so that we get the best, most unadulterated views of one of BC's top 5 waterfalls, one which is spectacular when seen from the air.
After landing at Ptarmigan Lake, we will hike the 12 km down to Turner Lake where we will make camp for the evening. Firewood is provided at all the campsites so you can stay up late if you like and tell tall stories around a roaring fire.
DAY THREE TO DAY SIX - On day three we being canoeing. There are seven lakes in the chain and, depending upon the wishes and strength of the group we will tailor the itinerary to find something to suit everyone. Some may want to get to the farthest point on the chain before returning, some may prefer a more leisurely time paddling around, swimming and taking photographs. There are also hiking trails to be taken should anyone wish to get out of the canoes and back on dry land for a while.
DAY SEVEN - We will paddle back to Tweedsmuir Air’s Turner Lake camp where we will get picked up again by floatplane to return to Stewart’s Lodge for a well earned shower and a good dinner, spending the night in one of their log cabins.
DAY EIGHT - Leaving Stuart's Lodge after breakfast we will drive back to Whistler where we should arrive by late afternoon or early evening.
DAY EIGHT (JULY ONLY) - Leaving Stewart's Lodge after breakfast we will drive back to Whistler where we should arrive by early evening. Alternatively you may fly back to Vancouver with Pacific Coastal Airlines.
DAY EIGHT (AUGUST ONLY) - We will make the scenic drive to Bella Coola down the infamous ‘Hill’ to take a grizzly bear viewing tour on a raft on the Atnarko River. Beginning at the end of August bears congregate here to catch the salmon that arrive to spawn.
DAY NINE (AUGUST ONLY) - As with day eight of the July trip.
