Stein Alpine Circuit
The Stein Alpine makes up the most scenic section of the famous Stein Traverse. It is a breathtakingly wild area ripe for adventure. Full of glorious blue lakes it has been described as the most beautiful alpine region in southwest BC.
This is a trip for those who have some experience hiking and are fit and looking for a bit of a challenge. The reward is a fairly wild and pristine area that few people visit and the opportunity to have an adventure like no other. For the most part there are trails but some areas we visit will be off trail. We might also bag a couple of peaks while we're there as the area is a scrambler's delight. Nights will be spent enjoying the stars in this area with no light pollution.
Please bear in mind that this is a wilderness hike and the itinerary is only a suggestion and not set in stone.
DAY ONE - We depart from Whistler at 9am to drive to Pemberton from where we will take the In-Shuck-Ch logging road to the trailhead. The first day is a long hike in, easy at first and then getting steeper through old growth forest until we cross the 'Gates of Shangri-La' ( a major scree field) and reach the Lizzie Lake Cabin. We may use this facility as a base and hike with day packs but all depends on the weather and what the group would like to do.
DAY TWO to DAY FIVE - Now above the treeline we will explore the many lakes (Long, Arrowhead, Heart, Iceberg, etc.) and the mountains that surround us. There will be the opportunity to reach at least a couple of easy scrambling peaks (Anemone and Tabletop) and maybe a couple of more difficult ones as we decide on a daily basis what our objectives will be. Be sure to bring your camera as this areas is scenically outstanding and home to a great deal of wildlife including grizzly and black bears.
DAY SIX - Making the hike out and returning to our transport we will drive back to Whistler to be there around late afternoon or early evening. On the way we will probably stop in at Mile One in Pemberton for a well deserved burger and fries.
