Stein Alpine Circuit
The Stein Alpine makes up the most scenic section of the famous Stein Traverse. It is a breathtakingly beautiful area that we will access by helicopter to avoid a long and somewhat tedious hike in. Full of glorious blue lakes and scenic peaks and valleys it has been described as the most beautiful alpine region in southwest BC.
For the most part there are trails but some areas we visit will be off trail so be prepared for some rougher travel. The reward for a trip here is a fairly wild and pristine area that few people visit, but one that contains amazing scenery. We might also bag a couple of peaks while we're there as the area is a scrambler's delight. Nights will be spent enjoying the stars in this area with absolutely no light pollution.
Please bear in mind that this is a wilderness hike and the itinerary is only a suggestion and not set in stone.
DAY ONE - We depart from Whistler at 10am to drive to Whistler Heliport from where we will fly by helicopter to Lizzie Cabin. We choose to fly in because, to be frank, the hike into Lizzie cabin is long and rather tedious. We may use this facility as a base and hike with day packs but all depends on the weather and what the group would like to do, moving each day and setting up new camps is also an option.
DAY TWO to DAY FIVE - Totally above the treeline and in the magnificent alpine we will explore the many lakes (Long, Arrowhead, Heart, Iceberg, etc.) and the mountains that surround us. There will be the opportunity to reach at least a couple of easy scrambling peaks (Anemone and Tabletop) and maybe a couple of more difficult ones as we decide on a daily basis what our objectives will be. Be sure to bring your camera as this areas is scenically outstanding and home to a great deal of wildlife including grizzly and black bears.
DAY SIX - On our final day there is the opportunity for a final swim or hike before our helicopter arrives to pick us up and return us to Whistler.
Chances of seeing:
Black Bears - possible
Grizzly bears - possible
Wolves - possible
Cougars - less likely
Big Horn Sheep - possible
