Hesquiat Peninsula Trail - Women Only

The Hesquiat Peninsula is the quietest of our coastal trails, seeing way less visitors than the West Coast or Nootka trails, yet it also has the fewest difficult sections. Perhaps because it requires both a flight in and a flight out to access this keeps the numbers down, but whatever the reason those looking for a greater wilderness experience should seriously consider this trail. Less people also means more wildlife so those hoping to encounter wolf or bear might keep this in mind.

Itinerary

Please bear in mind that this is a wilderness hike and the itinerary is only a suggestion and not set in stone.

DAY ONE - Pick up at your hotel in Vancouver from where we will take a short drive to Horseshoe Bay to catch the ferry to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island (pick up possible here too). Once on the Island we head for Gold River (4 hours) from where our friends at Air Nootka will take us on a wonderful floatplane flight to Escalante Point.

DAY TWO - Today we begin our hike by heading to Barcester Bay (12km, 3-4 hours) where we will camp for the night at another wonderful beach. If the tide is with us we will have easy hiking on sandstone shelving with the only difficulty of the day being having to negotiate a large surge channel.

DAY THREE - Our terrain today will be a mix of sandy beach and sandstone shelving.  Watch for bald eagles perching on top of the numerous sea stacks that we will pass. Our goal for the evening is Estevan Point with its manned lighthouse.

DAY FOUR - A shorter day but slower going sees us tackle the Billion Boulder Beach (B3) all the way to Mahatlaw Point. Here we will be at the southern tip of the peninsula, after this we will be heading north and be on the inland section of the trail

DAY FIVE - Le Claire Point is our campsite for the night. The hiking is easy along beautiful stretches of spectacular sandy beach.

DAY SIX -  Today we head for Boat Basin and our final camp. We will pass many lovely pocket beaches along the way on an easy day's hiking. We will finish our trip with a visit to Cougar Annie's Garden before returning to Gold River in the afternoon with Air Nootka. Cougar Annie was a settler who outlived four husband and created her garden from 5 acres of wilderness
